Seemanchal is home.
It's also where the world's finest makhana grows.

Few people outside Bihar have even heard of Seemanchal. But this quiet stretch of ponds and jheels, fed by the Kosi and the Mahananda rivers, sits at the heart of the world's largest makhana belt, where the spiny lotus has grown, wild and cultivated, for generations. Bihar alone grows more than nine in every ten makhana seeds harvested on Earth.

Kosi Agro started with something simple: we already knew this world. The ponds, the harvest calendar, the families who wade in each August to gather the seed by hand: this is where we grew up. Now we're building a way to bring that knowledge straight to buyers who care as much about origin as they do about quality.

We're early, small, deliberate, and unhurried, because a business built on trust is worth building slowly. What we lack in size, we intend to make up for in honesty, and in knowing this crop better than anyone else in the trade.

Makhana: Bihar's Quiet Superfood.

01

Born of the Lotus

Makhana, the seed of Euryale ferox (the prickly water lily), is gathered from Bihar's ponds each autumn, between August and October. Once roasted and popped by hand, it becomes the pale, crisp seed known across Indian kitchens, and now, increasingly, far beyond them.

02

Light, But Not Simple

Naturally rich in protein and magnesium, low in fat, and free of cholesterol, makhana has quietly sustained Indian households and Ayurvedic kitchens for millennia. Only now is it getting the attention it has always deserved, as the world's appetite for honest, whole foods grows.

03

Seemanchal. Nowhere Else.

More than 90% of the world's makhana grows in Bihar, and Seemanchal is its heartland. The water, the climate, the generations of know-how: none of it travels. Source from Kosi Agro, and you'll know exactly which ponds and which people it came from.
